Make science count where it really matters

If you love being in the lab and want your work to make a tangible impact, this is a great opportunity to join a small, specialist team doing something genuinely unique. At Platelet Services, we help biotech and pharma companies understand how their new drugs affect platelets – a critical step in preventing unwanted side effects like bleeding or thrombosis. It’s niche science, but with real-world consequences. You’ll be part of a close-knit team, working on a variety of pre-clinical studies that directly influence drug development decisions.

What you’ll be doing

  • Running hands-on platelet assays (aggregation, flow cytometry, plate reader work).
  • Planning and executing experiments, every study is different.
  • Helping keep the lab running smoothly: ordering consumables, managing samples, and supporting venipuncture work (training provided).
  • Contributing to internal R&D, improving and developing new assays as the company grows.
  • Analysing and interpreting data using Excel and Prism.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll spend most of your week in the lab, supported by a friendly, collaborative team who take pride in good science done well.

Who we’re looking for

  • You don’t need to be a platelet expert – we’ll teach you that. What matters is that you’re:
  • Curious and capable – a scientist who enjoys problem-solving and learning new techniques.
  • Skilled in the lab – confident in pipetting, planning experiments, and working with precision
  • Experience with platelet function or other blood-based assays (such as flow cytometry) would be an advantage.
  • Flexible and positive – happy to get involved wherever needed in a small, growing company.
  • Collaborative and humble – you know great science happens when people work well together.

You’ll likely have a BSc or MSc in Biomedical Science, Pharmacology, Physiology, Haematology, or a related discipline and 2–5 years’ practical lab experience, either from academia, a CRO, or a biotech environment. A PhD is welcome but not required.

Salary & Benefits

  • Salary: £30K–£37K (with potential flexibility for less experienced applicants)
  • Private health insurance
  • Flexible working arrangement around lab schedules and experiments
  • 25 days holiday + bank holidays
  • Training and development: venipuncture certification, assay development training, and opportunities to attend scientific conferences
  • Friendly, down-to-earth environment with a strong team culture and excellent staff retention
  • Modern lab facilities at BioCity, Nottingham’s innovation hub

Why Platelet Services?

We’re a small company doing big things in a specialist field, which means you’ll see the full impact of your work, not just one small part of a process. You’ll have autonomy, variety, and the space to grow your skills as we continue to expand. If you’re ready to do meaningful science in a place where people care about the details and each other, we’d love to hear from you.
