SUMMARY:Early Career Researchers' Conference
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Platelet Society Virtual Early Career Researcher Meeting \nMeeting report\n \nOver a year ago Dr Paul Armstrong (Queen Mary University London) and myself (Dr Kirk Taylor; Imperial College London) sat down to plan the 2nd Early Career Researcher (ECR) meeting of The Platelet Society. We decided on a date in April 2020\, secured a venue\, sponsors and received exciting abstracts for the meeting. What we didn’t realise was that a global pandemic was lurking around the corner. One month before the meeting\, it soon became apparent that with the UK on the brink of lockdown\, we could not hold our meeting. Rather than simply cancel\, we postponed to September in the hope that we could get together in person. We also expanded the organising team and Carly Kempster (University of Reading) joined to help plan and deliver the meeting. Unfortunately\, as the worldwide lockdown progressed our hopes of an in-person meeting were dashed and we had to take things online. \n  \nFrom the submitted abstracts we selected 8 talks that we felt represented the breadth and depth of the Society. We incorporated both clinical and basic science\, alongside methodological advances and translational studies. Programme. \n  \nThe day itself went off without a hitch – Dr Steve Thomas (University of Birmingham) was our behind the scenes producer for the day\, making sure everyone could get in and could be heard (you’re on mute!). We had over 120 registrations from the UK\, Europe\, South Africa\, USA\, Canada and Mexico! The talks were really engaging with lots of questions from our virtual audience. \n \nCarly gave an update on the Platelet Society ECR survey\, highlighting that members would like more from the society. Suggestions for this included mentoring\, webinars\, socials\, improved communication and a skills repository. In response to this Carly and I are launching an ECR Working Group to develop the Society and introduce exciting new initiatives. All early career researchers/trainees are welcome to apply to join the working group (You don’t need to be a current member but if successful\, we would ask you to join- only £20/year). Full details can be found here and applications are open until 30th September. \n  \nWe hope that we will be able to get together in person in Keele next year (29th-31st March 2021). DESCRIPTION:The 4th EUPLAN conference: will be held in Bruges\, Belgium (September 19-21\, 2018)\n– organizer Hans Deckmyn\, Karen Vanhoorelbeke and Simon De Meyer.\nFor detailed information and registration please visit the congress web site \nPreliminary program and registration rates will be available soon.\nRegistration will open January 15. \nAbstract submission opens on April 15. \nEUPLAN: the EUROPEAN PLATELET NETWORK\nEuropean cooperation on platelet science\nLeading research on platelet structure and biology\, undertaken by many laboratories in Europe\, requires intensive and structural collaboration between basic science and clinical research groups. The European Platelet Network (EUPLAN) has been founded to promote and facilitate this collaboration.\nEUPLAN is a continuation and extension of earlier initiatives for meetings and symposia of European groups interested in platelet biology: \n\nthe German and European Platelet Meeting\, held 1986 -2010\nthe Erfurt & Nottingham Platelet Conference\, organized in 1984-2010\nthe UK Platelet Meeting\, held in 1998-present.\n\nIn 2010\, participating scientists decided to form a modern supra-national structure\, which brings together leading groups working on different aspects of platelet structure and biology. The network EUPLAN coordinates the organization of a biannual European Platelet Conference as an essential forum for presentation and discussion of preliminary data\, and actively promotes the scientific formation of younger researchers through the organization of thematic schools and practical courses.\nFurthermore\, EUPLAN provides a forum for effective translation of basic knowledge on platelet biology to the clinics and patients. By supporting short term exchange of researchers among the different participants it stimulates the sharing of tools\, technologies\, expertise\, animal models\, patient and genetic databases.
